Are You Willing to Suffer for Your Dreams?
Here's Why It Matters
Everyone wants to follow their dreams, but few people ask themselves what they’re ready to suffer for on the way to getting the dream.
It's easy to set ambitious goals and fantasise about what it'll be like when you achieve it. But do we actually consider the suffering and pain we need to go through to get there?
We tend to forget that you can't have the good without suffering through the bad.
You can't get to the top of the mountain without suffering through the climb.
This is why Mark Manson recommends asking yourself the following questions when deciding on what you want in life:
What pain do you want in your life?
What are you willing to struggle for?
Answering these questions helps in 3 ways:
1. You get clarity on what you actually want.
Not what you fantasise about or what sounds good. But what you're actually willing to make sacrifices for.
2. You embrace the reality of the commitments to the goal.
It's easy to dream about the end result but are you willing to go through the daily grind to get there.
3. You can better prepare yourself mentally for the journey.
Preparing yourself for the grind involved makes it easier to deal with the twists and turns along the way.
In the end, life isn’t just about going after your dreams.
It’s about choosing the challenges that are worth facing.
When you ask yourself what pain you’re willing to deal with, you match your goals with what you’re truly ready for.
This way of thinking can help you turn a dream into something real that you’re ready to work for, no matter how tough it gets.
So, next time you set a goal, don’t just think about the reward.
Think about the hard work it will take to get there.
Ask yourself: What am I willing to struggle for? The answer might change how you see your goals.
