Why Prioritizing What Matters is the Key to Avoiding Regret in Life

Time flies when you grow up.

One day you're young and full of dreams. But before you know it life gets in the way. The next thing you know you're in your 30's living on auto pilot. Life's got so busy that you've forgotten what matters to you.

You become reactive to life instead of proactive with life.

Eventually what matters to you gets forgotten.

Your dreams became just that. Dreams. And are replaced with niggling back pain (What happens to your back once your 30 years old?!).

In the NHS, To help figure out what patients want in their care, we ask them "What matters to you?".

Their answers are then used to help tailor their treatment or management to align better with what matters to them.

What if we applied this to our lives?

What if we asked ourselves what matters to me in my life so that I can tailor my life to what matters.

Why Asking "What Matters to Me?" Is Important

Days, weeks, months and years can fly by before you know it.

In the blink of an eye you can become an old man filled with regret (Kudos to anyone who got the Inception reference!).

That's why it's important to take time to pause.

Take a step back. Look at your life. Take the time to figure out what matters to you. What are your priorities and goals? What makes you feel fulfilled?

Then start thinking and planning on how to build your life around what matters. Whether that's creating work life balance or adding more time for creativity in to your life.

Decide what to focus on in your life. Then get to work making changes to prioritise what matters to you.

Life moves fast, and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important.

But by asking yourself "What matters to me?" you can take control and start living with purpose.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to realize you’ve been living on autopilot.
